The name of the mascot for the 42nd World Chess Olympiad is “Chess Mate”

With 100 days left for the start of the 42nd World Chess Olympiad, the official mascot of the competition will be disclosed to the public in a ceremony today. More than 600 suggestions have been received as part of the National Competition announced by the Baku Chess Olympiad Operating Committee in March 2016. Having reviewed all the bids, the Baku Chess Olympiad Operating Committee selected the mascot designed by Musa Jangiyev as winner of the competition.

Speaking about his mascot, Musa Jangiyev said, “After collecting some information about chess, I started working on the mascot. I came up with an image of a young chess player. He wears glasses. The black hair and brows are typical of our people. His clothes are a combination of national and modern features. The king is an important piece in chess. There have been kings in our history, too. This is why the young man wears a king’s gown. You can see Buta images and some carpet patterns on his gown. The youngster’s shirt, trousers and shoes are modern. I have tried to create an image of someone energetic and fond of thinking. I am very pleased that my mascot has been named the official mascot of the Baku Chess Olympiad.”
